Each day after Ken Hulse was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease brought with it a new set of financial problems and more uncertainty.
How would his wife, Robin, manage without Ken's health insurance? What if he had to go to an adult day care center? What would happen when his long-term disability runs out three years from now? "We were preparing for retirement, not Alzheimer's," said Robin, Ken's primary caregiver. The Peachtree City, Ga., couple's search for solutions highlights both the emotional and financial challenges confronting a growing number of baby boomers.
Experts say 5.4 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease. That number is expected to increase dramatically as the 78 million boomers age. Researchers believe 1 in 8 boomers, the first of whom began turning 65 last year, will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. As boomers age, nearly 1 in 2 will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's by age 85.
Alzheimer's has also become a budget-busting disease for families, particularly women, who make up more than half of caregivers. According to the Alzheimer's Association, the average lifetime cost of care for an Alzheimer's patient is $174,000. In 2011, the overall cost of health care, long-term care and hospice for patients was $183 billion; by 2050, that cost is projected to be $1.1 trillion. Continue to read: statesman.com
