A guest speaker at the third annual Symposium on Aging Care in Fredericton said that reducing risk factors could play a crucial role in preventing Alzheimer's disease. Nursing home leaders, care providers, elected officials, civil servants and academics are attending the three-day event at Le Centre communautarie Sainte-Anne. The goal is to create an educational environment where attendees can have productive discussions about better ways to care for the elderly.
Dr. Ken Kosik, a neurologist and laboratory scientist from the University of California, Santa Barbara, spoke Wednesday morning. He said one way to assist the elderly is to encourage people of all ages to make lifestyle changes. While there's no cure for Alzheimer's, he said implementing these changes can lower the risk of getting the disease."There are some (risk factors) we can't do anything about, such as age and genes," he said. "Areas where we can make a difference are, one, medical risks that include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and tendency to diabetes. "The other area where we can have an impact is lifestyle. Lifestyle risks are ... exercise, nutrition, keeping the mind challenged, trying to reduce chronic stress and having a social circle." He said one way to influence large groups of people to adapt healthy behaviours is by using social networks on the Internet. Another way, he said, is to set up day centres that would help people decrease their Alzheimer's risks. Read more: theglobeandmail.com
