More than five million people across the United States are living with Alzheimer's disease today and the number of cases is growing.
The Executive Director of the West Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association says there are many reasons for that, including the fact that Americans are living longer.
"It's getting worse because we fabulous, wonderful baby boomers happen to be getting old. We're entering the age of greatest risk and we're also seeing more and more people develop, what we're calling, younger onset," Jane Marks said.
Marks was a guest on Wednesday's MetroNews Talkline.
She says, at current rates, the amount of people with Alzheimer's disease in West Virginia will continue to grow. Officials estimate, by 2025, the number of Alzheimer's cases in the Mountain State will be 25% higher than those in 2000.
Marks says there are times when forgetfulness turns into something else.
"You should take seriously the warning signs when they move beyond forgetting somebody's name or forgetting an appointment," Marks said.Wednesday was National Alzheimer's Action Day. Continue to read: wvmetronews.com
