One thing known about dementia is that long-term memories tend to linger, while short-term memories become more and more difficult to retain as the illness progresses.  Knowing this, there is an opportunity for individuals that are just beginning to experience memory loss to proactively learn to manage the disease.  As with diabetes, congestive heart failure, and other chronic illnesses, there are ways to "self-manage" Alzheimer's disease.
