As adults with Alzheimer disease spiral downward, the worsening dementia interferes with memory, emotions, judgment, activities of daily living and overall wellness. While many of these changes are part and parcel of this complex disorder, research findings from the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center (RADC) at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, suggest that depressive symptoms develop independently. The RADC is one of 29 national centers established by the National Institute on Aging and dedicated to identifying effective preventive and treatment options to reduce disability secondary to Alzheimer disease. Every three years, Wilson and his colleagues call upon older adults enrolled in the Chicago Health and Aging Project, asking them to complete the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, a self-report of depressive symptoms. Combined with clinical assessments to identify the onset and/or progression of Alzheimer disease, the depression scale ratings offer invaluable insight into the minds of the participants. Understanding that self-reported data might be less accurate in individuals with cognitive impairments or dementia, the researchers also interview relatives, friends and caregivers of a subgroup of participants periodically to gain additional perspective. Continue to readadvanceweb.com
