The cell study, investigated the effects of resveratrol on the level of amyloid-beta peptides produced from different cell lines. Researchers at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Institute for Medical Research, in Manhasset, New York, treated cell lines which produce human amyloid-beta with resveratrol. The scientists tested the effectiveness of resveratrol by monitoring the amyloid-beta levels inside and outside the cells. The researchers found that resveratrol significantly reduced amyloid-beta peptide levels in treated cells, compared to the untreated cells. The scientists suggest that resveratrol stimulates the breakup of amyloid-beta peptides by the proteasome (a protein complex that digests proteins into short polypeptides and amino acids). “These findings demonstrate a proteasome-dependent anti-amyloidogenic activity of resveratrol and suggest that this natural compound has a therapeutic potential in Alzheimer’s disease,” the study authors conclude. Read more: natural-holistic-health.com
