The current number of people living with Alzheimer's is five million, but it's expected to increase to 16 million by 2050. That's why medical officials say educating yourself and loved ones about this disease is becoming much more important. More than 5 million people suffer from Alzheimer's disease in the united states according to the Alzheimer's association.

Alzheimer's is a very complex disease, affecting people differently, which is why doctors say there are a lot of myths about the disease. Including: things like memory loss, which is a natural part of aging and it only affects elderly people.
The most prominent myth is that Alzheimer's only affects memory loss.

Teresa Oliveri with the Roxy Ann Memory Community explains, "Approximately about 20% will lose some form of speech and they wont be able to communicate. They lose some of their ability to know what's proper socially and so sometimes that's understood."

Nurse Teresa Oliveri says her community serves only Alzheimer's and dementia patients and so a number of precautions must be taken.

"The windows are alarmed we have a barrier around the fence so there is an alarm around the fence there is rails along the hallways, we have to watch out that all plants are non toxic."
