One researcher at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is working on a way to delay and possibly prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Amal Khalil Kaddoumi, an assistant professor of pharmaceutics at the ULM College of Pharmacy, is studying the mechanism of particular proteins that play a significant role in the development of the disease.“We know that patients with Alzheimer’s have a decline in cognitive function, and at some point, they will lose contact with their surroundings and the people around them,” Kaddoumi said. “What I’m doing is looking at the mechanism of the disease and how we can treat and prevent it.” People with Alzheimer’s disease have an increased level of a toxic molecule called beta amyloid in their brain because they have decreased levels of certain transport proteins responsible for removing that molecule from the brain to the bloodstream, Kaddoumi said.
