Scientists differ in their research approaches but that's a good thing, according to world-renowned neuroscientist Susan Greenfield, who is searching for the root cause of Alzheimer's disease, at Oxford University.
Such endeavour on many fronts to build a picture of the genesis of the mind-robbing disease was needed to remove the spectre of fear that now surrounded neurodegenerative disease, Professor Greenfield said.
A professor of pharmacology and director of the Oxford Centre for the Science of the Mind, she spoke to Health+Medicine before an address to Alzheimer's WA in Perth last week, outlining the latest research into the disease.
"With all the amount of resources and brainpower that is going into this, there must be some kind of progress," Professor Greenfield said.
"I don't think it will be a miracle cure overnight but I think it will be more like the advances happening with cancer.

"Fifty years ago cancer was a death sentence. But now, although it is still very serious and people still die, on the other hand we know a lot more about prevention, stabilising the condition, about going into remission, about making people comfortable and lifestyle factors. Drinking tea and coffee protect against MRSA

Out of more than 5,500 Americans who took part in a government study published in the Annals of Family Medicine, those who drank hot tea or coffee were about half as likely as non-drinkers to contract methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in their nostrils. People who regularly drink tea or coffee may be less likely to be carriers of the 'superbug' MRSA, according to a U.S. study. Read moredailymail.co.uk
