There is hope that one day medicine will be able to effectively treat or even cure Alzheimer's disease.
Unfortunately, that day may be more than 10 years in the future, making continued research all the more important now, said Dr. Bruno Giordani, director of neuropsychology at University of Michigan Medical School.
Giordani spoke about advances in Alzheimer's disease research at Muskegon Community College earlier this month. Despite a lack of effective therapies now, researchers are making breakthroughs in better diagnosing the disease and measuring its progress: key factors when it comes to testing medications, he said.
About 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and care for Alzheimer's is estimated to cost $183 billion in 2011, with about $130 billion paid for by Medicare and Medicaid. Total cost is expected to increase to $1.1 trillion by 2050 when 16 million are expected to have the disease if a cure isn't found in the meantime.
Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, and fifth-leading cause for those older than 65.
