In study, released by the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, it was found that participants who were obese, during midlife, increased their odds for Alzheimer's disease and dementia up to eighty percent. Contributors to the study were divided into four groups based on their Body Mass Index (BMI): underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese. The conclusion stated, “Both overweight and obesity at midlife independently increase the risk of dementia, Alzheimer Disease (AD), andVascular dementia (VaD),” and further stated that genetic and early-life environmental factors possibly contributes to the relationship between midlife obesity and dementia.
In almost all studies completed regarding Alzheimer’s Disease, the leading cause of behavioral and psychiatric symptoms is the continued weakening of brain cells. Medication, environmental influences, and some medical conditions can also add to the symptoms and the disease.
