Amyloid is excreted by all neurons, but rates increase with aging and dramatically accelerate in Alzheimer's. Astrocytes, which deliver blood, oxygen and nutrients to neurons in addition to hauling off some of their garbage, get activated and inflamed by excessive amyloid.
Now researchers have shown another way astrocytes respond is by packaging the lipid ceramide with the protein PAR-4, which independently can do damage but together are a more "deadly duo," said Dr. Erhard Bieberich, biochemist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.
"If the neuron makes something toxic and dumps it at your door, what would you do?" said Bieberich, corresponding author of the study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. "You would probably do something to defend yourself." Continue to readsciencedaily.com

(daily activities like cooking a meal)
The brain is basically a series of networked nerve cells transferring information along billions of connections. We aren't certain how it works, but we do know that people who suffer from dementia as a result of Alzheimer's disease have trouble forming new connections and therefore retaining information. A student from Staffordshire University in the UK has been working on a videogame calledLife in Memory Lane which assists the player in storing memories by assembling bits of biographical information. The new memory is then shown to the player through a short piece of video set to music.
"This is something I'm really passionate about," said Zohabe Aziz, the 23-year-old designer of the game. "A lot of games and activities do not relate to people with dementia. I've tried to relate mine to the person and their experiences to keep their memories intact while keeping the design simple and user-friendly so they can navigate their way through the game using quite large buttons.". Continue to readescapistmagazine.com

(Staying sharp)

Exercise your brain: Intellectual and social stimulation help build "cognitive reserve."
Get physical: Clogged arteries slow blood flow to the brain, and people who are less active in middle age are at increased risk of Alzheimer's when they're older.
Eat right: The same foods that are heart-healthy are brain-healthy, such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. Continue to readpostbulletin.com
