When love one  first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the emotions ranged from sorrow (You had read about this tragic condition) to acceptance (he or she had been increasingly forgetful and confused) to fear (would you one day face this same fate)?  All you could - and can - do for my mother is to care for her in every way...but what could I do to reduce my risk of a future diagnosis? 
Here's what the Alzheimer’s Association recommends:
  • Manage your weight. A "long-term study of 1,500 adults found that those who were obese in middle age were twice as likely to develop dementia in later life. Those who also had high cholesterol and high blood pressure had six times the risk of dementia. Adopt an overall food lifestyle, rather than a short-term diet, and eat in moderation," says the Association.
  • Cut down on foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Eat more "protective" foods, such as dark-skinned fruits and veggies, cold-water fish, and nuts like almonds and walnuts. Continue to readexaminer.com
