Genentech has been awarded the right to run a trial on an experimental drug that could cure Alzheimer's, a disease that currently has no known cure. The pioneering drug trial approved this week for the South San Francisco biotech firm comes on the heels of an Obama Administration announcement regarding a new initiative that aims to eventually eliminate Alzheimer's disease.
Currently one of the leading causes of death, Alzheimer's ravages the brains of its victims, destroying their memories in the process. It is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Scientists hope that by the year 2025 they will be able to uncover a viable treatment, if not an outright cure. Such a breakthrough would be a potentially award-winning achievement in the careers of Genentech's researchers.
Genentech is at the forefront of the quest to solve the Alzheimer's dilemma. Its scientists will administer their drug on a selected group of patients in Colombia chosen because they carry a specific gene that makes them more likely to develop Alzheimer's at an early age.
