A local pharmaceutical company believes it has made a major breakthrough in treatingAlzheimer's disease.
Laboratory tests at Targacept, Inc. have shown promises that the new drug compound can treat symptoms and slow down Alzheimer's progression. One the 50 largest bio-tech companies in the country and the largest in the Piedmont-Triad Research Park, Targacept is making headway in treating all kinds of brain disorders. "What's very promising about this is this drug has very broad activity," said Targacept spokesperson Don Debethizy. "It not only can improve cognitive function or thinking and attention."
Five million Americans have Alzheimer's and there are less than five drugs being used to treat it. Because of minimal treatments, those diagnosed or with it in their family have tough choices to make. The clinical trials underway now focus on ADHD and schizophrenia.
