Scientists from The Taub Institute for Research in Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, The Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center, and Departments of Neurology, Medicine, and Epidemiology, Columbia University, New York, and Clinical Research Center, Helen Hayes Hospital, West Haverstraw, New York have identified a dietary pattern that was strongly protective against the development of AD. They found a DP that explained variation of AD-related nutrients and was strongly protective against the development of AD, even after controlling for multiple covariates. This DP reflected a diet rich in {omega}-3 PUFA, {omega}-6 PUFA, vitamin E, and folate, but with lower SFA and vitamin B12. Furthermore, dietary habits of subjects adhering more to this DP were characterized as high intake of salad dressing, nuts, fish, tomatoes, poultry, cruciferous vegetables, fruits, and dark and green leafy vegetables and low intake of high-fat dairy, red meat, organ meat, and butter.Their findings provide support for further exploration of food combination–based dietary behavior for the prevention of this important public health problem.
