Tracing the distribution of fat in the brain will help the study of Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases, researchers in Spain say.
In a study published online this week in the journal Analytical & Bioanalytical Chemistry, Antonio Veloso and his team from the University of the Basque Country in Leioa describe a new technique to reveal the fat distribution of three brain sections.
The scientists scanned healthy brain tissue slices using imaging mass spectrometry, which shows the distribution of compounds by their molecular mass, and functional autoradiography, where a filmed image shows the distribution of activity induced by a drug.
They detailed the distribution of 43 types of lipids in the frontal cortex, hippocampus and striatum in an advance over traditional techniques.
Knowing the fat composition of the healthy brain and the distribution of the different lipid species is expected to yield clues on the course of neurodegenerative diseases.  Read moreupi.com

Caffeine's antioxidants can fight Alzheimer's
A team of researchers has found evidence that coffee is one of the richest sources of healthful antioxidants in the average person's diet - protecting against conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and heart disease on the most fundamental levels.  Read moreandhranews.net
